I received my law degree in 1971 from the University of North Carolina and have over 50 years of experience handling legal matters involving admiralty and maritime law, personal injury, business law, wills and estates, real estate disputes, construction cases, land condemnation cases and other matters.

As a North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission Certified Superior Court Mediator, I have conducted more than 2,500 mediations and arbitrations. In addition, I served as a United States Magistrate Judge for 16 years, where I handled federal civil jury and nonjury trials.

Charles K. (“Ken”) McCotter, Jr. receives the prestigious Chief Justice’s Professionalism Award

On Thursday, 18 May 2023, Chief Justice Paul Newby of the North Carolina Supreme Court presented to Charles K. (“Ken”) McCotter, Jr. of New Bern, NC, the prestigious Chief Justice’s Professionalism Award from the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism (CJCP). The Chief Justice’s Professionalism Award is presented annually to an individual whose contributions have demonstrated the highest commitment to genuine professionalism and the highest standards of legal ethics. Ken is the first recipient of this award from the NC 4th District Bar. Ken graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1971 and has been a practicing counselor of law for over 50 years serving as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for 16 years and a trial lawyer since 1995.
